From Us

Storytelling keeps us up at night and fuels our days. Here's what we've made so far that's ready to share.

These projects stemmed from a mandate to see things differently. To use digital narrative tools to bring people of color to the center of the story. To free them to create and command their own universes. Sometimes the characters are real and other times they are slightly cheekier versions of real people. But they are always true to themselves and their story. Guided by a shared journalistic ethos, we seek stories in the seams of society, where strength and courage dwell. And where fiction has nothing on real life.

70 Million

The first season of 70 Million will focus on how locals are addressing the role of jails in their backyards. Our reporters will travel around the country and hear from people directly impacted by their encounter with jails and adjacent policies, and from those committed to reversing those effects on people and communities. Specifically, we aim to chronicle the progress ground-up efforts have made in diversion, bail reform, recidivism, adoption of technology and other crucial aspects of the move toward decarceration at local levels. (This podcast is made possible by a grant from the Safety and Justice Challenge at the MacArthur Foundation.)

Thank you to the MacArthur Foundation

Thanks to a generous grant from the MacArthur Foundation, we are developing a 10-part audio documentary series to highlight how local actors have taken up the call for criminal justice reform and made strides where they live. The series is set to premiere in the Fall.
